How to Add CPU Usage Monitor to Raspberry Pi

Monitoring Raspberry Pi CPU usage is an important task that every Raspberry Pi user should do since it allows them to keep a check on the system resources that are utilizing excess memory. It warns them when the Raspberry Pi CPU usage exceeds the desired threshold level.

Several tools or commands are introduced that help you monitor Raspberry Pi usage; however, these tools and commands don’t provide you with continuous Raspberry Pi CPU usage monitoring.

If you are looking for a permanent solution, you must add a CPU usage monitor display on your Raspberry Pi desktop and this article shows you how you can do it.

How to Add CPU Usage Monitor on Raspberry Pi

To add a CPU usage monitor display on your Raspberry Pi desktop, follow the below-mentioned steps:

Step 1: Right Click on the Raspberry Pi panel and select the “Add/Remove Panel Items” option.

Step 2: Click the “Add” button on the “Panel Preferences” menu.

Step 3: Add the “CPU Usage Monitor” panel.

Step 4: Close the “Panel Preferences” and you will see the CPU Usage Monitor display on your Raspberry Pi desktop.

However, to keep a check on CPU usage, you must enable the percentage option so that you will get to see the CPU usage in percentage. For this reason, right-click on the “CUP Usage Monitor” icon and select the “CPU Usage Monitor Settings”.

Checkbox the “Show usage as percentage” option and then select “OK” to confirm selecting the option.

This adds the percentage sign on “CPU Usage Monitor” and you can confirm it from the desktop icon.

With CPU Usage in percentage, you will now be able to identify the amount of usage your device consumes during an operation.

Conclusion

CPU Usage Monitor is helpful for Raspberry Pi users as it allows them to keep a check on their systems’ CPU resources. In case of excessive usage, the users can take preventive measures such as shutting down some heavy apps, servers, or the whole system. For continuous Raspberry Pi CPU usage Monitoring, you can easily add plugin on your Raspberry Pi desktop from the “Add/Remove Panel Items” option. However, to get the CPU usage in percentage, you must enable it from the CPU Usage Monitoring Settings.
