What is the Purpose of the ESP32 Development Board?

A development board or dev board is a printed circuit board. It has different components mounted on it. The main component is a microprocessor or a microcontroller. Development boards are mostly used in embedded systems. The purpose of the ESP32 Development Board is thoroughly explained in this article.

ESP32 Development Board

ESP32 is a development board by Espressif and is a successor of ESP8266. It is mostly used in IoT development. It is a very low-cost module that consumes very less power. The development boards are used to program the microprocessor chip on them. So, development boards having wireless connectivity are easy to use. ESP32 also offers wireless connectivity via built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules. The Bluetooth module is specifically a low-energy Bluetooth module. This development board offers efficient memory and different peripherals.

Purpose of ESP32 Development Board

ESP32 development board can be used for multiple purposes. Some of these purposes are explained below:

IoT Development

The primary purpose of the ESP32 development board is to make IoT projects, as it has wireless connectivity and fast speed. The rapid communication and connectivity are due to its dual-core processor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and high transmitting and receiving rate.

Designing Prototypes

The ESP32 development boards are widely used in making prototypes for different circuits before they are finally embedded into Printed Circuit Boards. The peripherals of ESP32 are very easy to use, and the programming of microprocessors becomes very simple through ESP32. It is because ESP32 boards are compatible with different Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) such as Arduino IDE and Thonny IDE. It is also used by engineering students to design their projects.

Embedded Systems

As discussed above, ESP32 supports user-friendly hardware peripherals as well as software programming environments. This makes it perfectly suitable for embedded systems where hardware and software are intricately integrated. ESP32 is used in embedded systems such as home automation, smart locks, weather monitoring systems, and robotics.

Industrial Automation

Industrial automation is crucial in the present world, where demand for production is very high. To meet these demands, industries are automating at a very fast speed. ESP32 development boards are rigorously used in industrial automation to monitor production, collect data, and optimize sales.

Modernizing Agriculture System

The ESP32 development boards can be used to automate agricultural systems by keeping records of crop production and livestock. It can further improve irrigation techniques and connect agriculture systems with weather monitoring systems.

Power Saving

ESP32 is a low-power-consuming development board. Therefore, it is used to save power. It has five power-saving modules that allow it to sleep in different modes when not working fully. First, it goes to modem sleep and then light sleep. If it remains inactive for more time it turns on deep sleep then it hibernates and ultimately turns power off.

Real-Life Example Where ESP32 Board is Used

  • Smart Lightning System, where Lights can be turned ON and OFF using the remote control.
  • Video Surveillance Robots use ESP32 for real-time monitoring of the home or workplace.
  • The handheld Game Console also uses ESP32 for playing games.
  • ESP32 is used in heaters and Air Conditioners to control them remotely.

Conclusion

ESP32 development boards serve the purpose of integrating hardware and software, which makes them very useful for IoT development and embedded systems. ESP32 boards are used extensively in industries, automation systems, control systems, and prototyping.
