How To Find WiFi Password on a Chromebook Laptop?

WiFi is wireless connectivity to the internet, and to connect WiFi with your Chromebook, you must require a password key. You can modify the default WiFi password according to your choice, but still, you have to remember it and must write it down somewhere in your notepad. In case you have forgotten your password, you can still find your password on Chromebook, but it’s tricky, and it requires some programming skills. Find WiFi Password of Your Chromebook

In Chromebook, the only way to find a WiFi password is to switch to developer mode. The Two main steps to find a WiFi password on your Chromebook are

    1. Switching to Developer Mode
    2. Finding WiFi Password Through Chrome shell – Crosh

1: Switching to Developer Mode

Developer mode is a mode in which you can make changes in Chromebook according to your choice. Entering into a developer mode on Chromebook will powerwash your Chromebook and will reset all the data. Back up your data before switching to developer mode follow these steps to enter developer mode on your Chromebook:

Step 1: Press the Esc+Refresh+Power button to restart the Chromebook.

Step 2: Press Ctrl+D to enter into Developer mode.

Step 3: A warning screen will appear; press the Enter button.

2: Getting Chromebook WiFi Password Through Chrome Shell – Crosh

The second step in finding the WiFi password on Chromebook is from the crosh shell. Crosh is the command interface of the Chromebook. You can get your wifi password by following these steps:

Step 1: Now, to open the crosh, press the Alt+Ctrl+T buttons:

Step 2: Now, in the crosh shell, write the following commands:

Switch user using:

sudo su

 
Change directory:

cd /home/root/

 
List the content of the directory using:

ls

 
Step 3: You will get a code string simply copy it.

Step 4: Type cd and paste the code string you have copied previously, and press the Enter key.

cd <code-string>

 
Step 5: Next, type:

more shill/shill.profile

 
A list of connected WiFi networks will be opened.

Step 6: Find the name of your WiFi network. Once you find it look for Passphrase=rot47: followed by some random text this will be the encrypted WiFi password.

Step 7: Decrypt the text using the following:

echo > [encrypted-password] | tr '!-~' 'P-~!-O'

 
You will get a decrypted WiFi password on your Chromebook’s screen.

How to Disable Developer Mode?

After finding your WiFi password, simply exit the developer mode by following these steps:

Step 1: First, press the power button and hold it for a few seconds

Step 2: A pop-up screen will appear; select the power-off option.

Step 3: Press the power button again to turn on the Chromebook

Step 4: A screen will appear with the message “Enable the OS verification” click on the space bar button and press Enter key.

Step 5: A new screen will open; press the Enter button again.

Step 6: Chromebook will restart, and developer mode will be disabled.

Is There Any Other Way to Find WiFi Passwords on Chromebook?

No, there is no other way to find the WiFi password on your Chromebook, unfortunately. You have to find your password through developer mode only.
