How Much Storage Do I Need On My Laptop?

When it comes to buying a new laptop there are multiple factors that can affect your choice and among one of the most important factors is the storage capacity of your laptop. To make it easy for you to select the suitable storage capacity for your laptop we have given some of the factors along with the two most common types of storage being used in laptops today.

Determining the storage capacity for a laptop

To decide how much storage you will be needing, you have to make it clear first that for which purpose you are using the laptop. We can divide the purpose into three small categories based on which you can decide the storage size of your laptop.

For study purposes

If you are a college or university student and you need to save your assignments, presentations, or books in soft form then you won’t be needing much space. Also, you can use some educational software in your laptop by keeping the same storage size that you might have to use during your study period.

Moreover, using this storage size will be economical and will also fulfill your needs as the storage for this size is readily available in the market.

For professional use

If you want to use your laptop for your professional work then you will be needing large storage for your laptop. Like if you are a video editor, engineer or any other professional you might have to run some heavy software that requires a lot of space and also you have to save your work.

In that case the minimum storage that you can use is 512GBs but the storage size of 1TB is more likely to be sufficient if you are working on different softwares. However, if your work is more related to graphics designing then the later storage size is a better choice.

For gaming purpose

For the gaming purpose the storage size needs to be large because nowadays the minimum installation size for an average game is approximately 30 to 50 GBs. Many games have hefty updates which can only be installed if you have bigger storage capacity. If you want to use your laptop for gaming purposes, then you should be thinking of a minimum 1 terabytes (1 TB) of storage space for your laptop.

Types of storage devices for your laptop

Now from the above discussion I think you have got the idea of how much storage will be required for your laptop and now the next question comes to one’s mind is what type of storage one should use. Mainly there are two types of storage devices commonly used that are:

Hard disk drive (HDD)

This is the conventional storage device that has a moving disks in which the data is stored magnetically. They are less expensive, slower and are bulkier than SSDs.

Solid State drive (SSD)

The solid-state drives are the type of hard disks that store the data in the integrated circuits and unlike the HDDs they have no moving parts and are much lighter and smaller in size. They are significantly faster than conventional hard drives.

Which one is best either SSD or HDD?

As discussed above the speed of SSDs is much higher than HDDs, but they are more expensive than HDDs, so if you have a limited budget then you can think of combining the SSD and HDD for storage purposes. By doing this you can make your laptop considerably faster. However nowadays most of the laptops are coming with SSDs but the storage size is less so you can increase the storage by using HDD with the built-in SSD of your laptop.
