How to get Strings
There is one way to get strings that is by killing spiders that you can find mostly in the caves. If you find it difficult to find them then you can also wait until nightfall where they spawn naturally on the ground.
This means that there is no recipe to craft strings and killing them will give 2 pieces of string which would be sufficient to make a loom.
How to make Wooden Planks
There are lots of different trees available in the game such as oak, acacia, birch, and spruce trees and you can use any of them to make a wooden plank. So, the first step is to find a tree nearby then chop it using your hand or an axe if you have any which is a better way to do it and this will give you some wooden logs.
Now place them in your inventory and open a crafting table and then put this log there on any slot that will give you 4 wooden planks.

Place 2 pieces of strings and planks in the same order shown in the following image to make a loom.
How to use a Loom in Minecraft
Loom is used to put some pattern on the banner that you like and when you click on it you will notice different slots there as displayed below. On the left side of the window you need to put the banner and then you need to place the dye color which you want to add to the banner.
After placing these two items you will notice that some patterns will appear in the middle, you can select any of them and the result will be displayed on the right side.
