How to install Minecraft on Raspberry Pi

Here, in this article, you will get to know the steps through which you will be able to install and play Minecraft on Raspberry Pi.

Step 1: First, you are required to boot up your Raspberry Pi device and then open the terminal of your device. In the terminal, you will need to add the below given command-line:

$ sudo apt update

Step 2: Next, you will need to check whether the packages are upgraded. To do it, you will have to execute the below mentioned command-line in the terminal.

$ sudo apt upgrade

Step 3: Now, you will be required to update your Raspberry Pi firmware and in order to do it, add the below given command in the terminal.

$ sudo rpi-update

Step 4: After successfully updating the firmware, you will then need to reboot your device by typing “reboot” in the command line.

Step 5: After the system reboot, open the terminal again and add the below commands in the terminal to install some required drivers.

$ sudo apt-get -y install xcompmgr libgl1-mesa-dri

You will see that the above package is already installed and if it’s not it will successfully install it. Now, you will need to run different libraries through the below mentioned command in the terminal.

$ sudo apt-get -y install libalut0 libalut-dev

After that, you will require some utilities which you can install through the below given command.

$ sudo apt-get -y install mesa-utils

Step 6: Next, you will have to execute the following command in the terminal which will open the Raspberry Pi configuration.

$ sudo raspi-config

There, you will need to select the “Advanced Options” and then select “Compositor” and you will have to disable it in order to make your game run smoothly.

Step 7: Next, you will need to install Java on your Raspberry Pi so that it will be able to install the jar file using the below mentioned command. If you have previously installed it, you will get confirmation that it’s already installed else it will install for you.

$ sudo apt install default-jdk

Step 8: Now, you are ready to install Minecraft on Raspberry Pi device through adding the below mentioned command line in the terminal.

$ mkdir ~/Minecraft; mkdir ~/Minecraft/Natives; cd ~/Minecraft && wget https://s3.amazonaws.com/Minecraft.Download/launcher/Minecraft.jar

$ java -jar Minecraft.jar

Step 9: After a few seconds, the Minecraft launcher will be installed on your Raspberry Pi device and you will need to Register your account first in order to play the game.


After performing the above steps, you should be able to install Minecraft on your Raspberry Pi device and you will need to make sure that you will follow all the instructions carefully and don’t forget to disable the “Compositor” option if you want your game to play properly. Furthermore, you will need to register an account on Minecraft if you want to play the game and it will take a few minutes to finish all the process and then you will be able to enjoy the game.
