Debian

How to update Debian

Debian is the distribution of Linux, with a built-in repository of many packages. There are a lot of errors that are faced by the users and on the basis of feedback of users, developers try to fix those bugs. Until the user doesn’t update Debian, one cannot improve the efficiency of Debian. Not only bugs, but there are also a lot of new packages which are introduced to the repository of Debian, so it is recommended to update the repository on a daily basis.

There are two methods to update the repository of Debian either by GUI (graphical interface method) using the application of update or by a command-line method using the terminal. We will discuss both of the methods to update the repository of Debian in this article.

Update Debian Using the default application

We can update Debian by installing the updates from its build-in update application. For this purpose, go to the search bar and type “update”, an icon of “Software & Updates” will appear, click on it.

When you click on the icon, a window will be opened.

Click on the Updates tab.

We can see from the prompt window, there are different options like Automatically check updates this will allow Debian to updates automatically, similarly next option is When there are security updates and we selected next to it “immediately” means when whenever there will be updates regarding the security they will be downloaded immediately and the last option is when there are other updates so if there any other updates regarding the software or applications associated with Debian they will be downloaded. Now let’s say we want to change the status of the “Automatically check updates” so click on the dropdown menu next to it.

So it gives the time span when you want Debian to check updates on a daily basis, after every two days, on a weekly basis, after every two weeks, or never and one can choose the option according to its own requirement. We can see there are some updates regarding the security present. We can install them by clicking on it, they will ask for the password for the authentication and then will install them.

Update Debian using the command-line method

We can also update Debian in command-line mode using the terminal by simply executing the following command.

$ sudo apt update

To ensure all the packages are upgraded up to date, we will upgrade the repository.

$ sudo apt upgrade

We can also update and upgrade in a single command as:

$ sudo apt update && upgrade

To install newer kernel use:

$ sudo apt dist-upgrade

Conclusion

Conclusion
We have to stay updated with the new innovations of technology. It is recommended to update and upgrade the system to the latest version in order to not face any error. If we summarize the whole process explained in this writeup is updating Debian through the command-line method as well as the GUI method. Both the methods are useful and it is recommended to update Debian once before using it so you can experience better results.
